WSLH Department: CDD - Communicable Disease Division
WSLH Test Code: MP000689
Day(s) Performed: Monday-Friday
Turn-around Time: 10 business days
Recommended Uses: For epidemiologic purposes to support WDPH to identify strains associated with invasive disease.
Contraindications:
Additional Tests Performed:
Patient Preparations:
Specimen Requirements: Streptococcus pneumonia isolates:
▪ From CSF
▪ Resistant to any clinically relevant antibiotic
▪ Suspect treatment failure
▪ Suspect vaccine failure
Specimen Handling & Transport: Isolates may be stored and transported at ambient temperatures
Collection Kit/Container: Isolate on chocolate agar or blood agar
Collection Instructions:
Unacceptable Conditions: Mixed cultures may significantly lengthen turnaround time.
Requisition Form: Streptococcus pneumonia requisition form
Required Information: Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier; date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label.
Results Include: Streptococcus pneumonia serotype information
Limitations: Cultures must be viable for identification.

It may not always be possible to discriminate between multiple serotypes within a serogroup due to a high degree of genetic similarities or due to the existence of DNA polymorphisms among single serotypes. Therefore, a serogroup will be assigned for isolates where a serotype cannot be identified.

Isolates that are not able to be serotyped will be sent to CDC for further identification.
Additional Tests Recommended:
