Note: Within 6 hours of draw, blood collection tubes MUST be centrifuged per the manufacturer's recommendation. If manufacturer's recommendations are unavailable use 2500 X rpm for 10 minutes at room temperature. After centrifugation, transfer serum to a sterile polypropylene tube.

Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier, date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label.

Rejection Criteria:

Specimens that have been heat-inactivated, pooled, grossly hemolyzed, or have obvious microbial contamination. Uncentrifuged specimens or specimens that have not been handled as described above will be rejected.

Specimen Handling:

Store specimens at 2-8 °C and transport to the lab with frozen cold packs. Freeze specimens if testing will not be performed within 5 days of collection and ship on dry ice. Frozen specimens can be tested up to 6 weeks after collection.

Results Include:

Hepatitis C Virus RNA Detected or No Hepatitis C Virus RNA Detected. Quantitative value (IU/ml and Log10 IU/mL) if HCV RNA detected.

Limitations:

Does not distinguish between acute and chronic states of infection.
