Turn-around Time: 1-3 days
Recommended Uses: This test has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the quantitation of HCV viral load in confirmed positive patients. It has also been validated at the WSLH as a test to confirm HCV infection in seropositive patients.
Additional Tests Performed:
Patient Preparations: Routine blood draw
Specimen Requirements: Minimum of 2 ml of serum separated within 24 hours of collection
Specimen Handling & Transport: Store specimens at 2-8C and transport to the lab with frozen cool packs. Freeze specimen if testing will not be performed within 5 days of collection and ship on dry ice. Frozen specimen can be test up to 6 weeks after collection.
Collection Kit/Container: HCV PCR Specimens
Collection Instructions: Routine venipuncture. Note: Within 6 hours of draw, blood collection tubes MUST be centrifuged per the manufacturer's recommendation. If manufacturer's recommendations are unavailable use 2500 X rpm for 10 minutes at room temperature. After centrifugation, transfer serum to a sterile polypropylene tube.
Unacceptable Conditions: Uncentrifuged specimens or specimens that have not been handled as described above will be rejected.
Requisition Form: CDD Requisition Form B
Required Information: Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier; date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label.
Results Include: Hepatitis C Virus RNA Detected or No Hepatitis C Virus RNA Detected. Quantitative value (IU/ml and Log10 IU/mL) if HCV RNA detected.
Limitations: Does not distinguish between acute and chronic states of infection.
Additional Tests Recommended: Hepatitis C Antibody
Additional Comments: A negative result does not exclude active HCV infection.
