Specimen Requirements: | Nasopharyngeal swabs or aspirates in media appropriate for the culture of Bordetella species |

Required Information: | Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier, date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label which is required to have a minimum of two identifiers. |
Rejection Criteria: | Dry swabs and swabs in viral transport are unacceptable for Bordetella culture. Avoid temperature extremes |
Specimen Handling: | Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible with frozen cold packs. Any delay will decrease the ability to culture the organism because of die-off of the Bordetella during transport. |

Results Include: | Negative for Bordetella species; Culture shows Bordetella (species) |
Limitations: | Only Bordetella species of clinical significance will be identified. A negative result does not rule out infection with Bordetella species. Overgrowth by normal patient flora may inhibit growth of Bordetella species. Bordetella holmesii will not be recovered with the culture methods employed. |
