One mL of serum is optimal; a minimum of 0.2 mL is acceptable.

Required Information:

Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier, date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label.

Obvious microbial contamination, hemolyzed, or lipemic sera

Specimen Handling:

Store serum specimen at 2-8 °C and transport with frozen cold packs. Freeze (-20 to -80°C) specimen if testing will not be performed within 5 days of collection and ship on dry ice.

Results Include:

Rubella IgG Antibody Negative, Positive, or Equivocal with interpretation.

Limitations:

Samples collected too early in the course of an infection may not have detectable levels of IgG; a second sample may be collected after 2-7 weeks to look for seroconversion.

To determine etiology of current illness, appropriate testing should include Rubella Virus PCR (Test Code VR01725), Rubella IgM Antibody testing (Test Code SS02025), and/or paired sera analysis.
