Specimen Requirements:

Dacron-tipped lesion swab with plastic shaft, in viral transport medium

Collection Instructions:

Vigorously swab at base of a new lesion using a Dacron swab, and immediately place swab in vial of Viral Transport Medium (VTM). See detailed instructions listed under Collection Kit 18, Viral Specimens.

Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier, date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label which is required to have a minimum of two identifiers.

Rejection Criteria:

Lesion not swabbed, cotton or calcium alginate swabs, wood shafts, formalin fixed materials

Specimen Handling:

Store specimens at 2-8 °C and transport with a frozen cold pack. Specimens must arrive within 15 days of collection.

Results Include:

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 mRNA detected, Herpes Simplex Virus 2 mRNA detected, No Herpes Simplex Virus 1 mRNA detected, No Herpes Simplex Virus 2 mRNA detected, or Indeterminate

Limitations:

A negative test result does not rule out infection with Herpes Simplex Virus.
