Preparation for Collection:
Specimen Requirements: Dacron-tipped lesion swab with plastic shaft, in viral transport medium
Collection Instructions: Vigorously swab at base of a new lesion using a Dacron swab, and immediately place swab in vial of Viral Transport Medium (VTM.) See detailed instructions listed under Collection Kit 18, Viral Specimens.

Required Information: Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier; date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label.
Rejection Criteria: Cotton or calcium alginate swabs, wood shafts, formalin fixed materials
Specimen Handling: Store specimens at 2-8C and transport with cool pack. Specimens must arrive within 15 days of collection.

Results Include: HSV 1 mRNA detected, HSV 2 mRNA detected, No HSV 1 mRNA detected, No HSV 2 mRNA detected, or Indeterminate
Limitations: A negative test result does not rule out infection with Herpes simplex virus.
