WSLH Test Code: | SS02042 |
Day(s) Performed: | Test is performed once a week |
Turn-around Time: | 1-8 days |
Recommended Uses: | Serodiagnosis of an infection with one of these agents. Paired acute and convalescent sera are preferred for diagnostic testing. |
Pre-approval: | N |
Contraindications: | |
Additional Tests Performed: |
Preparation for Collection:
Specimen Requirements: | 1-3 ml serum |
Collection Instructions: | Routine blood draw |

Requisition Form: |
|
Required Information: | Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier, date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label. |
Rejection Criteria: | Obvious microbial contamination, hemolyzed, or lipemic sera |
Specimen Handling: | Store serum specimens at 2-8 °C and transport with frozen cold packs. Freeze (-20 to -80°C) specimen if testing will not be performed within 5 days of collection and ship on dry ice. |
Packaging Requirements:
Courier Information: | This test is not eligible for fee-exempt courier service. |
Specimen Receiving Hours: | Monday-Friday 7:45 AM - 4:30 PM, Saturday 7:45 AM - 12:00 PM |
Results Include: | RMSF Titer and Typhus Titer. Diagnostically Significant Titer: Four-fold titer change with convalescent titer greater than or equal to 1:128; single serum titer of greater than or equal to 1:256. |
Limitations: | Some cross reactivity between Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Murine Typhus occurs at lower dilutions. |
Additional Tests Recommended: | Patients returning from rickettsial endemic areas with antibody reactivity to the Spotted Fever Group rickettsia and/or Typhus Group rickettsia should be tested for Orientia tsutsugamushi (scrub typhus) to rule out the possibility of serological cross-reactivity. |
Additional Comments: | A fourfold or greater rise in antibody titer between acute and convalescent sera is considered strong evidence of recent infection. Antibody reactivity to Rickettsia rickettsii antigen should be considered Spotted Fever group reactive. Other organisms within the group include R. akari, R. conorrii, R. australis, and R. sibirica. |
Methodology: | Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFA) |
Includes: | Semi-quantitative total antibody IFA testing for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Murine Typhus. |
