Recommended Uses: Serodiagnosis of an infection with one of these agents. Paired acute and convalescent sera are preferred for diagnostic testing.

Required Information: Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier; date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label.
Results Include: RMSF Titer and Typhus Titer. Diagnostically Significant Titer: Four-fold titer change with convalescent titer greater than or equal to 1:128; single serum titer of greater than or equal to 1:256.
Limitations: Limitations: Some cross reactivity between Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Murine Typhus occurs at lower dilutions.
Additional Tests Recommended: Patients returning from rickettsial endemic areas with antibody reactivity to the Spotted Fever Group rickettsia and/or Typhus Group rickettsia should be tested for Orientia tsutsugamushi (scrub typhus) to rule out the possibility of serological cross-reactivity.
