Recommended Uses: To detect infection due to Francisella tularensis in individuals exhibiting symptoms consistent with tularemia.

Patient Preparations:
Specimen Requirements: Positive blood culture; tissue; swab of lesion, or bacterial isolate.
Specimen Handling & Transport: Store specimens at refrigerated temperature (2-8C) and ship specimens with a frozen cool pack. Ship blood culture bottles at ambient temperature.
Collection Kit/Container:
Collection Instructions: Aseptic collection of specimens.
Unacceptable Conditions: Do not place tissue in formalin or any other fixative.

Required Information: Please include all pertinent clinical information and exposure history. Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier; date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label.
Results Include: Negative for F. tularensis, Francisella tularensis detected

Additional Comments: If Francisella is suspected, please call the WSLH prior to submission of clinical specimens. It is best that blood cultures be incubated at the clinical laboratory. If positive for an isolate that cannot be ruled out as Francisella, submit the isolate to WSLH and order test code MP00470. Francisella is a Select Agent under Federal Regulations and must be reported to the CDC Select Agent Program.
