| Patient Preparations: | Patient should not have been given barium, bismuth, laxatives, anti-diarrheal agents or antibiotic treatment for at least one week prior to specimen collection. |
| Specimen Requirements: | Stool specimen in 10% Formalin, sodium acetate-acetic acid-formalin (SAF), para-pak SVT, or EcoFix. Cary Blair and unpreserved stool are acceptable for Cryptosporidium ONLY. |
| Specimen Handling & Transport: | Room Temperature for preserved specimens / Refrigerated for unpreserved specimens. |

| Required Information: | Patient history may be critical for the diagnosis and identification of intestinal parasites. In addition to the information mentioned above, patient history submitted should include any foreign travel, any prophylaxis or treatment received, clinical symptoms, compromised immune status and prior parasite infection if applicable. Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier; date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label. |
| Results Include: | Negative or Positive for Giardia; Negative or Positive for Cryptosporidium |
| Limitations: | This test is a direct fluorescent antibody stain for the detection of Cryptosporidium species oocysts and Giardia species cysts only. If other parasitic organisms are suspected, routine ova and parasite examination(s) are required. Multiple specimens, collected every other day for up to 10 days, may need to be tested before ruling out Cryptosporidium species or Giardia species infection. |

| Additional Comments: | The presence of Cryptosporidium species oocysts and Giardia species cysts in a stool specimen does not preclude the possibility of either other parasites being present in the stool or the presence of another condition which may be causing gastrointestinal illness. |
