Recommended Uses:

Testing for patients with signs and/or symptoms of acute febrile illness and known or suspected exposure to viral hemorrhagic fever causing viruses. 

Evaluation for more common acute febrile illnesses should be considered and should include travel history, exposure risk, and consultation of the CDC yellow book prior to use of this panel.

Required prior to submission.

Contraindications:

Specimens other than whole blood will be rejected.

Some pathogens in this assay have other preferred diagnostic testing methods and may be rejected for this test based on evaluation.

Preparation for Collection:

Consultation on submission for this test will provide best collection practices.

Specimen Requirements:

Human whole blood collected in plastic EDTA tubes.

Two EDTA tubes requested. Minimum of 4 mL total.

Send immediately. Stable refrigerated (2-8°C) for up to 7 days.

Collection Instructions:

Specimen should be collected in plastic EDTA tubes. Do NOT separate plasma.

Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier, date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label which is required to have a minimum of two identifiers.

Limitations:

Positive results do not rule out co-infections with pathogens not included in the panel. 

Not all pathogens that cause acute febrile illness are detected by this test. 

Negative test results do not preclude infection with the pathogens targeted by this panel. Retesting 3 days after symptom onset may be necessary.

Real-time PCR for the detection of Bacillus anthracis, Leptospira spp., Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, Chikungunya virus, Dengue virus (serotypes 1, 2, 3 and 4), Lassa virus, Ebolavirus spp. (Bundibugyo, Reston, Sudan, Tai Forest, Zaire), Marburgvirus, West Nile Virus, Yellow fever virus, Plasmodium spp., Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax/ovale, Leishmania spp. (including L. donovani and L. infantum).

Additional testing may be performed by the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene or CDC based on the results.
