| WSLH Test Code: | MP00689 |
| Day(s) Performed: | Monday-Friday |
| Turn-around Time: | 10-14 days |
| Recommended Uses: | For public health surveillance of strains associated with invasive disease |
| Pre-approval: | No |
| Contraindications: | Non-invasive isolates |

|
| Preparation for Collection: | |
| Specimen Requirements: | All CSF isolates Streptococcus pneumoniae invasive isolates that are: Resistant to any clinically relevant antibiotic Suspected vaccine failure Suspected treatment failure Suspected outbreak |
| Collection Instructions: | |
| Collection Kit/Container: |
Isolate on chocolate agar or blood agar |
| Requisition Form: |
|
| Required Information: | Vaccine history and susceptibility results Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier, date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label which is required to have a minimum of two identifiers. |
| Rejection Criteria: | Isolates that do not meet surveillance criteria |
| Specimen Handling: | Isolates may be stored and transported at ambient temperatures |
| Packaging Requirements: | |
| Courier Information: | Specimens submitted for public health surveillance are eligible for fee-exempt courier service. Contact Purple Mountain Dispatch at 800-990-9668 for specimen pick up (in Wisconsin) or use the VPD FedEx number if sending from out of state. |
| Specimen Receiving Hours: | Monday-Friday 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Saturday 6:30 AM - 12:30 PM |
| Results Include: | Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype |
| Limitations: | Cultures must be viable for identification. Mixed cultures may significantly lengthen turnaround time. It may not always be possible to discriminate between multiple serotypes within a serogroup due to a high degree of genetic similarities or due to the existence of DNA polymorphisms among single serotypes. Therefore, a serogroup will be assigned for isolates where a serotype cannot be identified. Isolates that are not able to be serotyped may be sent to a reference lab for further identification at no additional charge. |
