Dry nasopharyngeal swabs, or nasopharyngeal aspirates.

Collection Instructions:

Dacron Swab or NP aspirate submitted in sterile, dry tube.

Required Information:

Laboratory regulations require the following minimum information to be provided on the requisition form for a specimen to be accepted for testing: Patient name or unique identifier, date and time of collection, patient date of birth and sex, specimen type/site of collection, test request(s), clinician name and UPIN, and address for reporting results. Please be certain that name/identifier on the form matches that on the specimen label which is required to have a minimum of two identifiers.

Rejection Criteria:

Specimens should NOT be submitted in charcoal-based media or on wooden shaft swabs.

Do NOT use cotton swabs.

Specimen Handling:

Specimens should be transported to the laboratory with frozen cold packs.

Limitations:

Test results must be correlated with patient history and clinical presentation to confirm as a case of B. pertussis or B. parapertussis infection. A negative result does not rule out infection with B. pertussis or B. parapertussis. B. holmesii is an uncommon cause of respiratory illness in humans.
